Now that it finally feels like fall in New York its time to start talking jackets! Fall coats are an investment. They are usually more expensive than other pieces in your every day outfits, but when chosen wisely, can be worn over and over again. Think back the post I did on the “cost per use” analysis and you’ll see that coats are probably one of the “least expensive” items in your closet (on a cost per use basis, at least!) I like buying jackets in neutral colors so I can maximize the outfits I can wear them with, and will throw in one or two less expensive statement jackets for more limited use. Here’s my top 10 fall coats that can be worn from work to weekend. Happy shopping!

- Reversible neutral This jacket is comfortable, practical, sleek… and reversible! Doesn’t get much better than that. The fit of the coat is slightly oversized (or very oversized if you are petite, like me!) so works well dressed down casually on the weekends or over a tailored work look (as I’m wearing it here.) I absolutely love the new Theory 2.0 collection. It’s priced under their standard fall collection, and the styles are a little sleeker. Theory 2.0 is only available online or in Theory stores and is a must check out. Shop other reversible coats here:
- Leather Yes, you can wear leather to the office (unless your office has a particularly strict dress code!) Although I can’t lie, I’ve absolutely worn my moto-style jackets to the office, a leather jacket with less (or no) hardware is definitely more appropriate. This peplum leather jacket is on the expensive side but is the perfect leather jacket to wear in and out of the office. I recently got it and have been wearing it all the time.
- Pop of color – If you’re anything like me and wear mostly neutral colored clothing, a pop or color coat matches way more than you’d expect! As long as the fit and style isn’t too crazy, a colored coat is a really chic way to elevate a look.
