These red gaucho pants are all about risk to me. Wide, cropped pants aren’t particularly flattering on my 5ft 1 frame and red is… well, very bright for me (Note to self, if red is a huge risk to you, you should seriously be wearing more color!!) I thought wearing a “risk-on”outfit would be apropos to starting the new year. After some [much needed relaxation] time on the beach, I really got to thinking how I could better push the boundaries in my life, at my day job, on this blog, and consequently, with my outfit choices. You see, for me, what I wear to work is my creative outlet. A way to dig deep into my sixth grade art classes and express something other than a spreadsheet or view on the market. What I wear to work may not define me, but it certainly does define how someone will make a first impression of me – do I want to be Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wear’s Prada (pre-makeover) or Anne Hathaway in The Intern? (mediocre movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it, BUT kick-ass outfit inspiration for modern working women.) What I want to be is someone stronger than she appears, smart without being loud, happy without being foolish and bold enough to be the first person to speak in a board room.
Sergio Rossi shoes (Kate Spade similar) / Saint Laurent bag (Zac Posen has another cute option)
Wearing a plain old black suit jacket and pencil skirt is a safe way to dress appropriately and not create attention towards yourself – a good way to familiarize yourself with your surroundings in a new job. But, taking a bold step in your wardrobe in the office sends a signal far more powerful than what words can say – a signal that you have graduated from being the junior person in the room who is nervous to be creative, think outside of the box and express your actual opinions. Stepping out of the plain black suit signals to the world that you are comfortable in your current seat and perhaps ready to take on some new responsibilities. Stepping out of the suit signals that you are confident. That is the signal that I am trying to send going into 2016. These pants feel a bit intense to me, they are definitely an adjustment to look at, but hey – shouldn’t any risk in life be that way?
My goals for TPS in 2016 are to create a forum where working girls can build a safe community to anonymously discuss office situations, news stories, and market eventsĀ (sounds like a chat room circa 2000, right?) to build off of our knowledge bases and empower each other to #makecorporatecool together.
